Splash into Summer Reading

The Splash into Summer Reading program has started for students who will be in kindergarten through fifth grade next school year. This is the seventh year of this exciting program to motivate students to read regularly over the summer to increase or maintain their reading levels!

Click here for all the specific information including sponsors and a promotional video!

Call the elementary office at 334-2757 with questions!

If you will be entering grades 6-8, here is an article that may be of interest to you regarding summer reading for this age group. It is written by Donnalyn Miller, a sixth grade teacher from Texas, otherwise known as "The Book Whisperer," for her gift of turning the most reluctant reader into a student who cannot put books down.

112 K-5 Students Complete Summer Reading Program by reading over 112,000 minutes total

112 students X 1000 minutes of reading equals a summer of literary fun and maintenance or increasing of student reading levels! It also equals an afternoon of wet, wet fun known as the Splash Bash for those 112 summer readers! Students spent an extra week of anticipation after a disappointing rainout on the original date, but the beautiful day on Thursday, Aug. 27 was worth the wait!

This could not have happened without our summer readers, but it also could not have happened without our sponsors that paid for 4 books in each summer reading packet and the equipment for the Splash Bash! KES thanks: Target Stores, J.J. Marketing (Star-Walk Entertainment), Scholastic, Inc. Ozark Mountain Bank, The Presley’s and The Track Family Fun Parks for their grants, donations and discounts! Also, the Splash Into Summer Reading Event is now part of the Center for Summer Learning’s National Summer Learning Day!

Splash Bash celebrates summer reading

You can tell from this student's "thumbs up" that the Splash Into Summer Reading Program was a hit for the fourth year in a row. 98 K-5 students read at least 1000 minutes during summer vacation and celebrated at the Splash Bash on Thursday, August 21. Read more about it in the Branson Daily News. Our sponsors this year were Ozark Mtn. Bank, The Track Family Fun Parks, Wal-Mart Volunteerism Always Pays program, The Presleys and a Target Store Grant. We are also grateful to JJ Marketing (Star-Walk Entertainment) for providing the equipment at a discount and for the Scholastic Literacy Partners program which allows us to purchase the books for the student packets at a large discount with free shipping.

Summer Reading and Library Programs

Don't forget that the elementary school has two great programs to keep kids reading all summer long! The Splash Into Summer Reading program encourages all students who will be in grades K-5 next school year to read and record 1000 minutes of reading during the summer to attend the Splash Bash when we return to school in August.

The "Catch the Reading Bug" summer library program kicks off on Wednesday, June 4th from 12:30-2:30 and continues for 6 weeks. It is the Wednesday field trip for KES summer school students, but you don't have to be enrolled in summer school to attend. Also, students who read and record at least 400 minutes in the "Splash..." program and return the certificate signed by a parent to the library program can receive a free Scholastic book. Door prizes (books) are drawn weekly and students who attend 5 of 6 weeks of the library program will be invited to stay overnight at a special party. The program is designed for students who will be in grades K-5 next school year, but younger siblings may come, if they are accompanied by a parent. Younger children are not eligible for the overnight party.

Click the embedded links or the links in the list to the right for more details about each program.
