WILD about Reading trip to the zoo...

123 KES students met their reading goal and were invited to attend the WILD about Reading incentive field trip to the Dickerson Park Zoo. Kindergarten and first grade students had to read at least 100 books and second and third grade students had to read at least 2000 minutes. Several students exceeded this goal two, three and even five times! We are definitely a school of readers!

The start to the day was a little treacherous, but once we arrived at the zoo, the sun prevailed and the students had a great time observing and interacting with the animals. The following slide show will let you experience just a few of the sights and sounds of the day!

Kindergarten Field Trip

The kindergarten students had a fantastic time last Thursday on their field trip. The first stop on the trip was Stockstill Park for some playtime and a picnic lunch. The next destination was the Butterfly Palace where students learned about the butterfly life cycle through a 3-D video, a presentation about butterflies and the opportunity for exploration in a tropical setting full of "flying flowers." The students also found their way through a mirrored maze and observed other insects, reptiles and amphibians. The students were respectful and well-behaved. We can all be proud of the way they represented our school in the community.

Pumpkin Patch

First grade students enjoyed beautiful weather and a wonderful day at McKenna's Pumpkin Patch just north of Branson. The fall fun included a hayride, hay maze, a barn slide and more. The owners at McKenna's were complimentary about the way our kids conducted themselves. After a picnic lunch, the students ventured to the park at the Rec Plex for climbing, swinging and more!

Incredible Field Trip offered to BLAST at-home readers

"Incredible Science" is the name of the game for K-3 students who complete the BLAST (Books/Literacy: A Super Time) at-home reading program. The special field trip to reward this accomplishment will consist of several components: a hands-on science presentation by Discovery Center of Springfield, an all-you-can-eat pizza buffet at Incredible Pizza in Springfield, a $3.00 play card donated by Incredible Pizza, and a round of mini golf, also donated by Incredible Pizza.

It is anticipated that this trip will be available to the students who earn it at no cost to families. Terry Miller and I are working on a Target Field Trip Grant to cover the majority of the cost and we will use various other fund raiser money to underwrite the cost of the trip as needed. We would also accept donations towards the cost of the trip from parents, community members or other blog readers. Please contact the elementary office at 417-334-2757 if you are interested in contributing in this way.
