More Preschool Progress

Construction continues on our new preschool/PAT building.

Kindergarten Field Trip

The kindergarten students had a fantastic time last Thursday on their field trip. The first stop on the trip was Stockstill Park for some playtime and a picnic lunch. The next destination was the Butterfly Palace where students learned about the butterfly life cycle through a 3-D video, a presentation about butterflies and the opportunity for exploration in a tropical setting full of "flying flowers." The students also found their way through a mirrored maze and observed other insects, reptiles and amphibians. The students were respectful and well-behaved. We can all be proud of the way they represented our school in the community.

Kirbyville Teacher Honored...

Lara Ernsting, third grade teacher, was recently awarded Southwest Missouri Elementary Educator of the Year by the Southwest Region of the Missouri State Teachers Association (MSTA). She was nominated by the Kirbyville Community Teachers Association (CTA). There was a lengthy application process in which each candidate shared their teaching philosophy, educational and leadership accomplishments and community involvement. Several people wrote letters of recommendation. Among the many reasons Mrs. Ernsting was selected was (to quote one of her students), “She makes learning fun, even math.” In recognition of her accomplishment the SW MSTA presented her with a plaque and $500. The CTA received $250 as well.

2009-10 Kindergarten and Preschool Enrollment

The Kirbyville R-VI School District will be holding kindergarten and preschool enrollment for the 2009-2010 school year from 9:00-11:15 and 12:30 to 5:15 on Tuesday, April 28 at the Kirbyville Elementary School. Kindergarten students must turn five before August 1, 2009 and preschool students must be at least 3 by August 1, 2009.

Appointments are required. Parents of kindergartners are asked to call the elementary office at 334-2757 and parents of preschoolers should call the Kirbyville Preschool at 239-3917 as soon as possible.

Parents of kindergartners must bring a birth certificate, immunization record and a utility bill with the physical address printed on it as proof of residency in order to complete the enrollment process. Kindergarten enrollment takes approximately one hour and includes a vision and hearing screening and developmental testing. Children should wear tennis shoes (no flip flops, boots, dress shoes) in order to successfully complete some of the tested items. Kindergarten students are eligible to attend summer school in June and are invited to participate in the Splash into Summer Reading program and the summer library program. Information about these programs and activities will be available. Please call the elementary office (334-2757) if you have any questions regarding kindergarten enrollment.

The primary goal of the Kirbyville Preschool is to prepare the 3 to 5-year-olds for kindergarten. Students learn pre-academic skills in a structured atmosphere that prepares the preschool children for daily routines in kindergarten. In addition to the academic instruction, social and emotional growth and development of expressive and receptive language skills are stressed. The preschool has been very successful in meeting this goal in terms of general kindergarten readiness and results of a test measuring kindergarten students’ understanding of print concepts. Kirbyville Preschool is a parent-pay program. Tuition is currently $13.00 per day. Parents of preschoolers must bring a birth certificate and immunization records to complete the enrollment process. Preschool enrollment takes approximately 30 minutes and includes a developmental questionnaire for parents. Hearing and vision screening is available. Please call the Kirbyville Preschool (239-3917) if you have any questions regarding preschool enrollment.

State Representative Maynard Wallace visits Kirbyville

Featured in the Branson Daily News at:
Missouri State Representative, Maynard Wallace was on hand on Friday morning at Kirbyville Middle School for a districtwide assembly to present a House Resolution honoring the Kirbyville School District for qualifying for the state's Distinction in Performance award for the 2007-08 school year. Representative Wallace addressed the entire student body and faculty complimenting them for their hard work and dedication towards educational excellence. He explained that their high MAP scores and high attendance rate were the reason the school had earned the award. He also attributed the school's success to the cooperative efforts of not only the students, but the entire faculty, staff, families and community. He said that he is proud that Kirbyville is one of the schools in his legislative district and that Kirbyville has a great reputation statewide.

Kirbyville R-VI School District was one of over 300 Missouri school districts that qualified for the state’s “Distinction in Performance” award on the basis of their academic achievements and progress during the last school year. In all, 330 school districts – compared to 295 last year – earned the coveted award, which is presented annually by the state education department. Of this year’s recipients, 278 are K-12 districts; 52 are K-8 districts. There are 523 public school districts in the state.

To qualify for the award this year, K-8 districts had to meet 6 of the 7 performance standards that apply to these districts, including all of those based on the results of MAP tests. Kirbyville met all seven. Under the state’s accreditation program, each school district is evaluated at least once every five years. Since it is based on the same standards as the accreditation program, the Distinction in Performance award provides an annual confirmation of a district’s status and state-level recognition of its overall performance.
