2nd and 3rd grade letters part of Ozark's Honor Flight "mail call"

The second and third grade students have written letters that have been/will be shared with the World War II veterans who are part of the Ozarks Honor Flight. This program provides a free trip to Washington D.C. to see the WWII Memorial and other memorials at no cost to the veterans. On the way home, there is a "mail call" and each veteran is presented with letters from his/her family, friends and area school children. Mrs. McNeal's and Mrs. Ernsting's classes wrote letters/essays/poems etc. that were read on the 2nd Honor Flight that took place on Tuesday, April 13. Mrs. Johannes' and Mrs. Dalager's class will be sending letters that will be read on the Honor Flight scheduled for May 18.

The school received a special letter from KY3, one of the sponsors of the Honor Flight, to thank us for participating and included with the letter, was another letter from a veteran that was on the inaugural flight back in November. It was a touching story of how the letters he received on the Honor Flight allowed him to relive a cherished 65 year old memory of a Christmas mail call. If you have a 2nd or 3rd grader, ask him/her about the story. Hearing the letter was a powerful way to see how the written word can have such an impact.

Dawn Motley honored as "Friend of Education"

The Southwest District of the Missouri State Teachers Association honored Kirbyville parent volunteer, Dawn Motley, as a “Friend of Education” on Monday, April 12 at the spring banquet. Dawn has been a long time volunteer in the district, helping out with school events, field trips and teacher projects. Dawn has been active in the Kirbyville PTO as an officer and a member for four years. Dawn’s positive energy is contagious and encouraging. When a student has a fresh haircut or a new missing tooth, Dawn is one of the first to notice and share in that student’s personal excitement. She knows many students by name and they all know her name.

The nomination letter posed the question, “What do you get when you mix the Energizer Bunny, a heart as big as the sun and a sparkling personality that shines like a star?” The answer, of course, was Dawn Motley. The letter further stated, “Her countless hours of cutting, copying and laminating have created time for teachers to devote to collaboration and instructional planning that directly impacts student learning. Dawn also directly influences the lives of children as a frequent guest reader in classrooms and at special library programs. Dawn assembles student folders for our at-home and summer reading programs. The students look forward to her enthusiastic presence as she chaperones field trips and supervises our annual summer reading celebration. Students love the photos she takes documenting many special events and capturing the spirit and fun. They feel proud when they are featured in school newsletters, in the district blog and on school bulletin boards.”

She was nominated for this award by the Kirbyville Community Teachers Association. The Kirbyville School District is grateful for her tireless service to benefit the students and the school community as a whole.

Congratulations, Dawn!!!

MAP Motivation...

MAP Schedule...

Missouri Assessment Program (MAP) testing has started already for third graders and will continue throughout the month of April in grades three through eight. Students are encouraged to be sure that they get adequate rest each night before testing and proper nutrition in the mornings. 2010-11 Kirbyville Preschool Enrollment...

The Kirbyville R-VI School District will be preschool enrollment for the 2010-2011 school year from 9:00-11:15 and 12:30 to 5:15 on Tuesday, April 27 at the Kirbyville Elementary School. Preschool students must be at least 3 by August 1, 2010.

Appointments are required. Parents of preschoolers should call the Kirbyville Preschool at 239-3917 beginning Wednesday, April 7.

The primary goal of the Kirbyville Preschool is to prepare the 3 to 5-year-olds for kindergarten. Students learn pre-academic skills in a structured atmosphere that prepares the preschool children for daily routines in kindergarten. In addition to the academic instruction, social and emotional growth and development of expressive and receptive language skills are stressed. The preschool has been very successful in meeting this goal in terms of general kindergarten readiness and results of a test measuring kindergarten students’ understanding of print concepts. Kirbyville Preschool is a parent-pay program. Tuition is currently $13.00 per day. Parents of preschoolers must bring a birth certificate and immunization records to complete the enrollment process. Kirbyville Preschool does accept out of district enrollment if space permits. Preschool enrollment takes approximately 30 minutes and includes a developmental questionnaire for parents. Hearing and vision screening is available. Please call the Kirbyville Preschool (239-3917) if you have any questions regarding preschool enrollment.

Kindergarten Enrollment and Screening Info

Enrollment is on Tuesday, April 27. The process will take about an hour and developmental testing is included. Please be sure your child is wearing tennis shoes (not flip-flops, boots or dress shoes) so that he/she can complete all screening activities. Appointments will be taken beginning Wednesday, April 7. Call the elementary office at 334-2757 for more information or to make an appointment.
