The teachers will obtain the supplies in bulk which saves parents money and ensures that all students have consistent supplies as needed.

All students who participate in P.E. will need clean gym shoes that can be left at school for use on the gym floor.

2012-13 Kirbyville Preschool Enrollment

The Kirbyville R-VI School District will be holding preschool enrollment for the 2012-2013 school year from 9:00-11:15 and 12:30 to 5:15 on Thursday, May 3 at the Kirbyville Parents As Teachers room.  Preschool students must be at least 3 by August 1, 2012.

Appointments are required.  Parents of preschoolers should call the Kirbyville Preschool at 239-3917 starting Monday, April 16.

Preschool enrollment takes approximately 30 minutes and includes a developmental questionnaire for parents.  Hearing and vision screening is available.  Please call the Kirbyville Preschool (239-3917) if you have any questions regarding preschool enrollment.

Kirbyville R-VI earns Distinction in Performance award...

Superintendent Carless Osbourn accepts the award from DESE area supervisor, Dennis Cooper.

Kirbyville R-VI School District qualified for the state’s “Distinction in Performance” award on the basis of their academic achievements and progress during the last school year.

To qualify for the award this year, K-8 districts had to meet 6 of the 7 performance standards that apply to these districts, including all of those based on the results of MAP tests. Under the state’s accreditation program, each school district is evaluated at least once every five years. Since it is based on the same standards as the accreditation program, the Distinction in Performance award provides an annual confirmation of a district’s status and state-level recognition of its overall performance.  Representatives of the district attended a banquet on Monday, March 19 in Springfield to receive the award along with other districts in southwest Missouri.  The Kirbyville School District has received this designation for nine of the past 11 years.

Local artist donates special wood carving...

William Gray, a local artist, presented two wooden carvings of a Braves head to the Kirbyville R-VI school board at the February board meeting. The statues were created from a white pine planted on the grounds of Kirbyville Elementary in memory of former Kirbyville student, Rene Smith, in 1995.  One of the sculptures will be presented to her family and the other will be on display in the school district.

The tree succumbed to its natural life expectancy and a disease known as White Pine Decline last school year. After consulting with a Missouri conservation agent, the district learned that the tree would have to come down. To provide a continued remembrance, a pink dogwood, native to Missouri, was planted in its place.

However, the memorial tree contained two final gifts. Portions of the tree were reserved and the pieces were placed in Gray’s creative hands. Through his artistry and vision, the Kirbyville mascot was revealed.

Gray explained, “I start with a master idea of the final piece, but the grain of the wood or flaws can dictate how the final product looks. I try to use the flaws in the wood to make the piece unique or give it character.”

White pine is not a typical medium for carving, but because of the significance of the tree, Gray was willing to give it a try.  He found that the material was fairly easy to work with even though it splintered some. He was able to work with this characteristic to enhance the final product. He also found that there was a lot of sap in the wood, creating another challenge.

“I try not to look at the negative characteristics of the material, but how I can work with it,” he added.

Gray, who has two children who currently attend Kirbyville Elementary, stated, “It was gratifying. I was given a gift and I want to use it to benefit others to give back. Even though I don’t know the family personally, we are all part of the community and we are all connected. I can empathize with the family’s loss and the value of the sculpture. I was honored to have the opportunity to be a part of this.”

Carless Osbourn, superintendent, said, The district is extremely honored to receive these magnificent and beautiful sculptures that have significant meaning in the Kirbyville School District and community.  Words can not express our sincerest gratitude and thanks to Mr. Gray for these gifts.”

Gaines selected Missouri Distinguished Principal by MAESP...

Addie Gaines, principal at Kirbyville Elementary School, has been selected as this year’s Missouri Distinguished Principal from the Southwest District of the Missouri Association of Elementary School Principals (MAESP).

She is one of 12 principals from MAESP districts around the state who will be honored March 10 at a reception and banquet at Tan-Tar-A Resort at Osage Beach.  The event will be held in conjunction with the annual MAESP Spring Conference.  This is the 23rd year that MAESP has held the banquet.

She received her undergraduate degree from Missouri Southern State University in Joplin, her master’s degree from Missouri State University in Springfield, and her specialist degree from Lindenwood University in St. Charles, Mo.

Gaines has been elementary principal in Kirbyville for 10 years. In addition to her elementary principal duties, she serves as the federal programs coordinator, the curriculum director, and the special services program coordinator. She has been in education for 23 years, including 11 years as a kindergarten teacher in the Seneca R-VI School District.  She has published several articles about early childhood education and classroom management in several books and journals, as well as, online. She has made presentations at the local, state and national level.

In 2011 Kirbyville Elementary was one of 8 schools in Missouri honored as a Missouri Gold Star School and one of 4 schools in Missouri honored as a National Blue Ribbon School. The National Blue Ribbon School award is the highest recognition given to schools by the United States Department of Education.

According to Gaines, accepting the National Blue Ribbon Award on behalf of Kirbyville Elementary was a both a capstone and a cornerstone. It was a capstone, as it signified the fact that students at Kirbyville are learning and achieving at high levels. It was a cornerstone, as it is a solid foundation upon which the future can be built.
